The Portuguese national team manager Paulo Bento has said that he must improve his communication with the players in order to get better results in the future. The Portuguese was speaking ahead of the match with Azerbaijan. He was one of the best managers at the recently concluded Euro 2012 after he helped the coach his national team to reach the semifinals of the competition when they were ultimately beaten by the winners Spain. Despite this, Portugal began the World Cup qualifying campaign in the worst possible fashion after a closely fought 1-2 win over Luxembourg, who was regarded as one of the easiest opponents.
Prior to the match against Azerbaijan, the manager has said that the players can certainly not be faulted for the performance they put in against Luxembourg. However, it was a deficiency with his communication skills that was responsible for the lack of spark within the national team. It is highly important that Portugal take all three points from this match because they will be facing their main opponents in the group Russia after this match. It is also expected that Portugal will be looking to make much better use of the star attacker Cristiano Ronaldo.
“The result was positive, as well as the manner in how we reversed a negative situation, but we then lacked the ability to control the game. But we won the three points, that was the main goal. The point is to reverse this trend. Maybe it’s my fault, maybe I have not passed on the message in the best way. The truth is that we are not as good and consistent as we could be,” said the manager after the match. Bento has also revealed that he will be looking to play a more attacking style of football in this qualification campaign.
