Portugal coach Fernando Santos is the latest to voice his displeasure at the perceived campaign by UEFA and FIFA to ensure that Cristiano Ronaldo does not win the FIFA Ballon d’Or award. UEFA president Michel Platini and Fifa president Sepp Blatter have both said that a German should win this coveted award ahead of Ronaldo.
They base their opinions on the impressive World Cup victory for the German national team, which features names like Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer in theBallon d’Or award shortlist. Real Madrid have already criticised such top figures publicly voicing their opinion aboutpotential winners.
The Spanish club felt that this would indirectly hurt chances of Ronaldo lifting the trophy for the second consecutive year. The Portuguese superstar has had a remarkable 2014 in which he has scored goals for fun while also helping Madrid win the Champions League.
Even though the World Cup saw the disappointing side of Ronaldo, his supporters have felt that he has more than done enough to win this award for the third time in his career. This would move him to just within one short of Lionel Messi, who is the record holder with four titles to his name.
Santos says that he believes Ronaldo is the best man to win this title. “It makes no sense people who are in those positions, whether in or UEFA Platini make such comments, as we have heard in recent years. It can influence in their speeches and in his case was not giving an opinion, but to say that you must. It is not a German win and qualify the issue and also do not looked good the way I should qualify that his intervention. Of course I think Ronaldo will win seems to me that this year no one was better than it,” said Santos.
